Hope this is a suitable place to post.

Had a bit of a discussion on global about training times and skill points. Just picked up my 4th crew member and done a little checking myself so if anyone's interested:

Training time looks to be based solely on the total of skill points + survival + diplomacy + combat. There's no difference between them, so no affect if unassigned points are added to a stat. Any points put into a skill (eg heat or first contact) no longer form part of the total so the training time is decreased. The skills themselves don't have an effect, just the points removed from the total.

Also, there's no difference between trained / acquired points, and starting stats of a character. So if you recruit a low-skill crew member and train them up, their training time will be the same as a high-skill crew member just bought with the same total points.

The upshot is if you've done a little exploring already, DON'T buy a super-low-skill crewmate, it's a waste of time. Get one that will slot into your exploration schedule, ie with the right stats to go for the next zone.

I'd ideally like to give a formula for the training time, but am a bit stuffed because the estimated time (that you get told the training will take before you click 'go') is NOT the same as the actual time. In my experience it varies by anything from a few seconds to a few minutes - don't know if anyone else has seen this? The estimated time has always been the longer of the two for me.

Couple of quick examples are (sorry, no pics):

Anna (Rookie)
Skill Points 90
Total Stats 70
No Special Skills
Training TIme ('estimated'): 15m 42s

Anna (Rookie)
Skill Points 1
Total Stats 93
All Special Skills
Training Time ('estimated'): 8m 36s - You can see the reduction by assigning special skills

Tobias (Sergeant)
Skill Points 288
Total Stats 256
All Special Skills
Training Time ('estimated'): 1h 52m 19s

Find in a table below the skill values I was able to obtain using dmat method. These are Combat stat zones, column 5 is zone level. Columns 6-10 are skill points gained, column 11 is exploration time in minutes.

Column 12 explains what skill values were used for all members.
4 - 4 - 4 - 8 - 4 means zone lvl -x value for 1st, 2nd etc members. My member nr 4 has lower skill points than others so I want him to gain most.
SOME - I used just enough skill points to lower the risk lvl to "some".

Anyone can get more points by using lower skill values, but there is increased risk of injury (and I think exploration time).

I got this new crew farming tactic for when you crew is about 500 / 500 / 500. Instead of Training , get low level arts at hyperion (best) and upgrade them. It only takes 5-6 minutes to upgrade them , and you get 2 skill points each time. So in about 25 minutes , you get 10 skill points , and it is faster than training.

Thanks Dmat and everyone else who helped gather and share all that great wisdom. Even years later it's still useful for newer players. The one issue for me is that going to each location with the optimal next place to explore is a bit time-consuming. To minimize travel, I'd rather complete each planet with the next-lowest-maximum crew-level needed. Even though exploring yields fewer gains, it seems to be fairly efficient overall. So here's a much-abbreviated version of those lovely data, which ignores different crew skills and is only sorted by the highest level needed for each location:

(Edit: I don't know why the big blank space; BBCode is annoying like that. Anyway, table is down there somewhere.)
